Google says HTTPS is a must do! But why?

Change is in the air!

There have been a lot of businesses sitting on the fence in previous years as Google has speculated about adding HTTPS as a ranking factor to the Google’s Algorithm Hummingbird.

Most companies have been holding back from moving to HTTPS as the update was never confirmed by Google. This is about to change as of July 2018 when it will be added to the Algorithm as a ranking factor and signal that your website is safe to browse.

Google is ultimately always looking for ways to improve the online user experience. The best way to do that is to increase the security of your browsing experience.

What does this mean for you and your website?

There has never been a better time to protect your business from any unsuspecting keyword ranking changes thanks to this new update.

Business owners over the past few years know how frustrating it is to see all your SEO hard work and money go out the window due to Google’s surprising updates. At least this time they are giving everyone time to adapt and upgrade our websites!

In terms of the user experience, if your website is on the standard HTTP, it will mean that any browser of your website on Google, the person will be served with a BIG WARNING ‘Your connection is not private’. You have 4 months to upgrade your website! If you are not prepared, you will be affected.

What do you need to do?

Get in touch with whoever is hosting or managing your website and ask them what you need to do to get your website on HTTPS.

For most developers, this is a pretty simple task once the Secure Server License (SSL) Certificate has been acquired from your hosting company. It could be as simple as adding this to your hosting cPanel and associating it with your website host.

If you do not have someone who manages your website, you will need to do a bit of research on how to use your hosting cPanel. If this is not your thing, then you will need to contact someone who can do this for you.  We at Fastrack can assist you with this

Why Upgrade?

You may be overwhelmed and think that this is just another Google update. However, there is a good reason behind their madness this time!

3 benefits of having your website on HTTPS:

  1. Google will rank you higher than websites using HTTP
  2. You are contributing to a safer online experience for your users
  3. HTTPS makes it hard for your website to be hacked

When?

Google has set a strict deadline of July 2018. So make sure you start acting today and make sure your website is on HTTPS.
